Knit With Me: The Claudia Pullover: A Beginner-Friendly Top-Down Raglan
The Claudia Pullover is one of those sweaters that looks polished and classic but is surprisingly approachable to knit. Designed as a top-down raglan sweater in DK weight yarn, Claudia is worked mostly in the round with simple stockinette stitch, easy raglan shaping, bold stripes, and a relaxed fit with approximately 3½–4 inches of positive ease.
If you’ve been wanting to knit your first sweater—or you’re ready to move beyond smaller projects—this is a great place to start. The pattern is designed for the confident beginner and uses straightforward techniques including knit-front-and-back raglan increases, working in the round, separating the body and sleeves, simple sleeve decreases, 1 × 1 ribbing, and picking up stitches for the neckline. The relaxed gauge also creates a fabric with a beautiful airy feel and drape.
In the full video tutorial below, I’ll knit through the Claudia Pullover with you from beginning to end. We’ll set up the neckline and raglan markers, shape the yoke, join to work in the round, divide for the sleeves, add the striped colour sequence, work the body and sleeves, and finish everything with the folded collar. I’ll also share some of the little techniques I use along the way—like carrying yarn between stripes, minimizing underarm gaps, fixing twisted stitches, and getting a stretchy, comfortable finish.
The Claudia is meant to be a sweater you can make your own. Choose two contrasting colours for the striped version, adjust the body length to suit you, or simplify it even further by knitting it in one colour. However you make yours, I hope this tutorial gives you the confidence to knit along and create a sweater you’ll actually love wearing.
Happy knitting,
XO Kim
