Fix Your Knitting Tension | Norwegian Knitting Method

If you’ve been struggling with uneven tension while using the Norwegian knitting method, especially between your knit and purl rows, you’re definitely not alone. When I first started knitting this way, I had a hard time getting consistent gauge and noticed quite a bit of rowing out in my stockinette.

Over time, I found two small adjustments that made a huge difference: changing the way I tension the yarn through my left hand and making one tiny adjustment after completing each Norwegian purl stitch.

In this tutorial, I’ll show you exactly what I do to create more even stitches, reduce rowing out, and make it easier to reach gauge. Like most things in knitting, tension is very personal, so the goal isn’t to copy my hand position perfectly—it’s to experiment until you find what feels natural and comfortable for you.

Happy knitting,

XO Kim
