Hi, I’m Kim — Welcome to M1R KNIT
M1R KNIT is a knitting education and pattern brand focused on the Norwegian knitting method. Through clear, close-up tutorials, beginner-friendly resources, and thoughtfully designed knitting patterns, I help knitters build confidence, improve their technique, and discover a more comfortable, connected way to knit.
I learned to knit more than 40 years ago simply by watching my mom.
By the time I was five, I could confidently knit a dishcloth — but interestingly, I didn’t knit the way she did. Somehow, I naturally developed what I later learned was the Russian, or Eastern knitting method.
And that’s how I knit for years.
Eventually, when I became interested in designing my own knitting patterns, I started paying much closer attention to how I knit. I began experimenting with different knitting styles and techniques — Continental, Combination and others — looking for a method that felt natural, efficient and comfortable in my hands.
Then I discovered the Norwegian knitting method.
And I fell in love with it.
For me, Norwegian knitting feels compact, relaxed and incredibly comfortable. I can knit for hours without the hand strain or discomfort I experienced with other methods, and the small, close movements just seem to suit the way my hands want to work.
But the thing that really won me over?
The Norwegian Purl
The Norwegian purl is probably my favourite part of this entire method.
Instead of bringing the working yarn to the front every time you purl, as you would with a traditional Continental purl, the yarn stays at the back of the work.
The needles do the work.
At first, the movement can feel a little unusual — and it definitely takes some practice. I often recommend knitting something simple, like a small blanket or another project with plenty of knit-and-purl repetition, so you can stop thinking about the individual movements and start developing your tension, rhythm and speed.
And then, at some point, it clicks.
That’s when it starts to feel like magic.
Why I Created M1R KNIT
M1R KNIT is a place for knitters who want to learn the Norwegian knitting method slowly, clearly and without overcomplicating it.
Here you’ll find close-up tutorials covering the Norwegian knit and purl stitches, tension, increases and decreases, construction techniques and eventually knitting patterns designed to put those skills into practice.
I also believe there is no single “correct” way to knit.
There are so many knitting styles in the world, and the best method is ultimately the one that feels good in your hands. Norwegian knitting happened to be the one that felt right in mine.
Maybe it will be yours too.
I’m so happy you found your way here.
Let’s knit together.
— Kim
