Start Here: Learn the Norwegian Knitting Method
It’s a little wild to think about how many knitters this video has reached over the years. Since I first published it, it has taught thousands of people the Norwegian knitting method and accumulated more than 18,500 watch hours on my YouTube channel. I love the Norwegian knitting method because, quite simply, it fits me. That doesn’t mean it will be the perfect knitting style for everyone—and that’s okay. There are so many different ways to knit, and I genuinely encourage you to experiment until you find the method that feels comfortable and natural in your own hands.
For me, this is it.
I’ve been knitting for more than 40 years, after first learning by watching my mother. Over the years, I’ve knitted in several different styles. For a long time I used an Eastern-style method and loved it, but when I began designing knitting patterns, I found myself needing to rethink some of my technique. I taught myself combination knitting, then Continental knitting, and eventually found my way to the Norwegian knitting method.
Norwegian knitting is generally considered a left-hand yarn method, much like Continental knitting, but there are some wonderfully distinctive differences—especially the Norwegian purl stitch.
And that was the stitch that completely won me over.
I had never enjoyed the traditional Continental purl. Then I discovered the Norwegian purl, where the yarn stays at the back of the work while you create the stitch, and it was honestly love at first sight.
Another reason I’ve stayed with this method is comfort. The movements are compact and close to the needles, and in all the years I’ve used it, this style has never caused me the kind of hand strain I’ve experienced with other methods. I’m incredibly thankful for that.
