UPDATED 2025. Start Here: Learn the Norwegian Knitting Method
This is the 2025 updated version of the viral first tutorial video here: m1rknit.com/blog/start-here-learn-the-norwegian-knitting-method
If you’re brand new to the Norwegian knitting method, start here.
This updated tutorial walks you through the foundations of the method step by step, including how to hold your yarn, position your hands, work the Norwegian knit stitch, and—my personal favourite—the Norwegian purl stitch.
What I love most about this style of knitting is how compact and comfortable the movements can feel. The yarn is held in the left hand, the hands stay relatively close to the needles, and the Norwegian purl allows you to keep the working yarn at the back while forming the stitch.
I’ve used the Norwegian knitting method for years, and it continues to be the technique that feels most natural and comfortable in my hands. That doesn’t mean there is one “right” way to knit—there absolutely isn’t. I always encourage knitters to experiment with different methods and find the one that works best for them.
If this is your first time trying Norwegian knitting, give yourself a little time to get used to the movements. They may feel unfamiliar at first, especially the purl, but once the rhythm begins to click, it becomes a wonderfully fluid way to knit.
Grab your needles and some yarn, and let’s get started.
Happy knitting,
XO Kim
