How to Work Wide M1RP & M1LP Raglan Increases (the Purl Side)

Working your raglan increases on the knit side can feel pretty straightforward—but what happens when you turn your work and need to make those same increases on the purl side?

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how I work wide Make One Right Purl (M1RP) and Make One Left Purl (M1LP) increases on the wrong side of the work, while purling across the row. We’ll go step by step through finding the bar between your stitches, placing it correctly on the needle, and purling it to create each directional increase.

The purl-side M1L can feel a little finicky at first, so don’t worry if it takes a few tries to get comfortable with it. I’ll demonstrate the increases more than once so you can clearly see how the stitches are picked up and worked around the raglan markers.

I’m purling using the Norwegian knitting method in this tutorial, so my purl stitch may look a little different from the way you normally work yours. You can still use the same increase technique with your preferred purling method.

Happy knitting,

XO Kim
