How to Work Wide M1R & M1L Raglan Increases in Garter Stitch

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to work wide Make One Right (M1R) and Make One Left (M1L) raglan increases in garter stitch.

Because garter stitch has a different texture and stitch structure than stockinette, finding the bar between your stitches can look a little different at first. I’ll show you exactly where to find that bar, how to lift it onto your needle, and how to work both the M1R and M1L around your raglan marker.

For the M1R, we’ll lift the bar between the stitches to the front of the needle and knit it. For the M1L, we’ll lift that same bar to the back of the needle and knit through the back loop.

These increases are worked with a stitch on either side of the raglan marker, creating a wide M1R and M1L increase while maintaining the textured look of the garter stitch fabric.

Happy knitting,
