Learn Norwegian Knitting From Scratch

If you’ve been wanting to learn the Norwegian knitting method, this tutorial is the perfect place to start.

In this complete beginner-friendly video, I walk you through the basics of knitting using the Norwegian method from beginning to end. We start with a long-tail cast on, then move into yarn tension, the Norwegian knit stitch, the Norwegian purl stitch, binding off, and weaving in your ends.

One of the reasons I love Norwegian knitting so much is the way the yarn is held close to the needles. The movements are compact, and when you purl, the working yarn stays at the back of the work rather than being moved to the front for every stitch.

And if you’ve never tried the Norwegian purl, this is the part I really want you to stick with. It can feel unusual at first, but once the movement starts to make sense, it becomes wonderfully rhythmic.

In This Tutorial, You’ll Learn:

  • How to work a long-tail cast on

  • How to tension your yarn

  • How to knit using the Norwegian method

  • How to work the Norwegian purl stitch

  • How to improve your knitting tension

  • How to bind off your knitting

  • How to recognize and correct a twisted stitch

  • How to weave in your yarn ends

If you are completely new to knitting, I recommend starting with a simple swatch, scarf, or blanket while you practice. Don’t worry about making every stitch perfect right away. The goal at first is simply to become comfortable with the movements and develop your own natural tension.
